Lotus Pier falls, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng flee.

The golden core transplant fails, and both of them are assumed dead.

Jiang Cheng becomes a wandering swordsman obsessed with getting revenge, Wei Wuxian is thrown into the Burial Mounds by Wen Chao.

Lan Xichen is captured and taken to the Nightless City by Meng Yao.

Lan Wangji flees the Cloud Recesses but loses his golden core in the process, and is saved by Wei Wuxian, who brings him back to the Burial Mounds.

Nie Huaisang discovers that Jiang Cheng is behind the murders of the Wen sect and takes him in. Jiang Cheng then becomes an assassin for Nie Huaisang, and carries out espionage missions that gradually escalate to assassinations.

Nie Huaisang is conflicted about the missions and sending Jiang Cheng on them, but they grow closer and closer during this time.

Jiang Yanli grows her own spy network from within the Wen court, and becomes known as the Black Lotus.

Frustrated at Wen Guangyao’s influence in his sect, Jin Zixuan starts a resistance, which grows and grows with aid from the mysterious Black Lotus.

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji carry out their own sabotage missions, trying to rescue Lan Xichen from the Nightless City.

Jiang Cheng discovers that Wei Wuxian is still alive on one of his missions, and they have an explosive reunion.

Jiang Yanli discovers her brothers are alive, and begins coordinating all the resistance efforts.

Nie Huaisang begins to show symptoms of Qi deviation, leading to cracks in his relationship with Jiang Cheng that result in Jiang Cheng's departure from the Unclean Realm.
The Rebellion Begins (Sunshot Campaign)

The sects rise up against Qishan Wen, Nie Mingjue leading the charge.

Jiang Cheng starts killing Wens indiscriminately and crudely.

Nie Mingjue is executed by Meng Yao, who then takes on the Wen name and becomes Wen Guangyao.

Wen Guangyao is sent to oversee Lanling Jin, effectively controlling the sect while Jin Guangshan remains a puppet leader.
-
Nie Huaisang is installed as the sect leader, while the Unclean Realm becomes a vassal state of Qishan Wen.

Jiang Yanli orchestrates her capture and is taken prisoner of the Wen court, where she catches the attention of Wen Xu.

Efforts against the Wens escalate as the resistance grows, until an all-out war is declared.

The major sects rise up against Qishan Wen with the resistance, culminating in several battles that end with the defeat of Qishan Wen and the sacking of the Nightless City.

Lan Xichen is rescued, and becomes sect leader of Gusu Lan.

Nie Huaisang and Jiang Cheng's relationship remains strained.

Jiang Cheng is approached by someone to assassinate Nie Huaisang, but chooses to warn him instead.

Over time, they reconcile.
